Health Care Practitioner Will Discuss Protection and Advocacy Systems, Interactions with Nursing Homes

Joanne R. Lax, a member of Dykema’s Health Care Practice Group, will deliver a paper – “Protection and Advocacy Systems: Self-Proclaimed Caped Crusaders or Strategic Allies?” – at the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) meeting on Long Term Care and the Law to be held in Austin, TX from February 25-27, 2013.

In her presentation, Lax, who represents health systems, hospitals, nursing homes, assisted living facilities, hospices and home health agencies on matters that range from state and federal regulatory compliance, administrative litigation and hearings and patient rights, will address:

  • the authority of the federally-created Protection and Advocacy Systems (P&A Systems)
  • the current work priorities of selected P&A Systems;
  • how these work priorities may affect nursing homes; and,
  • the range of appropriate and reasonable nursing home responses to an intervention by a P&A System

Organized by the AHLA, the nation’s largest, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) educational organization devoted to legal issues in the healthcare field, this three-day conference is CLE-, CPE- and CCB-accredited, providing between 17.5 and 21 credits for each.
