Phyllis Adams and Rochelle Lento to Present Fair Housing Acts Boot Camp

Phyllis Adams,Ann Arbor-based member in Dykema’s Health Care practice, and Rochelle Lento, Detroit-based senior counsel in Dykema’s Real Estate Group whose practice focuses on affordable housing development and economic development transactions, will serve as the co-presenters of a program entitled, “Fair Housing Acts Boot Camp,” for Leading Age Michigan. The event will take place on February, 25, 2015, at the East Lansing Marriott.

Adams and Lento will take an in-depth look at the HUD rule on Affirmatively Furthering Fair Housing, the Michigan Elliot-Larsen Civil Rights Act, and the Michigan Handicappers Civil Rights Act. The presentation will also provide an update on the HUD Section 202 program, as well as a review of a recent HUD Conciliation Agreement for a senior housing provider and the suspect policies pertinent to the case; as well as other pleadings in recent housing discrimination cases. Adams and Lento will also discuss recent allegations by the Michigan Civil Rights Commission regarding discriminatory advertising practices.

Objectives for the program include:

  • Describing the basic provisions and recent revisions to federal and state laws for Senior Housing
  • Reviewing landmark cases on fair housing laws, heard or pending, in the U.S. Supreme Court
  • Describing the policies and practices that have resulted in recent Fair Housing Acts investigations and litigation
  • Explaining policies and practices that have resulted in recent litigation to allegedly discriminatory advertising and marketing practices by a senior housing communities.

Adams will also co-present at another Leading Age Michigan presentation on February, 25, 2015, at the East Lansing Marriott. The “Living Care Disclosure Act,” training focuses on educating providers on various legal issues and best practices in dealing with Continuing Care Retirement Communities and the contracts between the facilities and residents.

In this program, Adams will provide an overview of Public Acts 448-451.
