R. Lance Boldrey, Lansing-based member of Dykema’s Gaming & Indian Law practice group, was quoted in the Detroit Free Press article, “Failed Wayne Co. horse track tied to new casino plan.”

The article discusses plans of the Sault Ste. Marie Tribe of Chippewa Indians for a proposed casino site near Detroit Metro Airport. The tribe has put forth a particular legal argument in order to sidestep political obstacles in the normally complex legal process it takes to open on off-reservation casino in Michigan. Boldrey believes the tribe has some interesting legal theories that could take them a long way toward satisfying federal requirements, but ultimately lose its fight because of restrictions in the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act, which generally prohibits new off-reservation casinos.
