Joanne R. Lax, a member in Dykema’s Health Care Practice Group, has been appointed Chair of the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA) practice group focusing upon Long-Term Care, Senior Housing, In-Home Care and Rehabilitation providers. This appointment commences at the start of the AHLA’s 2014 fiscal  year, which is marked by the organization’s Annual Meeting and In-House Counsel Program.

The Long-Term Care, Senior Housing, In-Home Care and Rehabilitation practice group that Lax will chair is one of sixteen practice groups in the AHLA. Lax will lead her group in devising strategic activities to advance and share knowledge of relevant health law issues. These include member briefings, webinars, roundtable discussions, tutorials, newsletters and presentation of whitepapers at AHLA educational programs.

Lax will also be one of the featured speakers at this year’s AHLA Annual Meeting, to be held on July 1-3, 2013 in San Diego, California. Lax will deliver remarks on the theme, “Hot Topics in HHA, Hospice and SNFs.” The one-hour address—which Lax will co-present with Deborah A. Randall, a D.C.-based consultant to the health care industry—will focus on such timely and important skilled nursing facility (SNF) issues as:

  • Mandatory SNF compliance plans – the process and content;
  • Mandatory SNF Quality Assurance and Performance Improvement (QAPI) programs;
  • New CMS requirements for SNF delivery of end of life care and other SNF clinical ethics issues.

The AHLA Annual Meeting is accredited, offering between 17.25 and 20.7 CLE credits and roughly 20.0 CPE credits. The AHLA is the nation’s preeminent, nonpartisan, 501(c)(3) educational organization devoted to legal issues in the health care field. The organization includes more than 11,500 members, representing law firm attorneys, in-house counsel, government and public interest attorneys, academicians and health professionals.
