Steven M. Zeller, Chicago-based member in Dykema’s Intellectual Property Department, was quoted in two Law360 articles, “Patent Cases To Watch In the 2nd Half Of 2016,” and “The Top Patent Cases Of 2016: Midyear Report.”

In the first article, Zeller commented on Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. et al. v. Apple Inc. , the first patent design lawsuit to be heard in the U.S. Supreme Court in well over a century. In the case, Samsung protested $400 million in damages awarded to its competitor Apple, who’d sued for infringement of some of its iPhone design patents.

In the companion article, Zeller responded to recent reversals of cases decided in accordance with Alice Corp. v. CLS Bank Int’l (which ruled that certain computer-generated ideas are abstract and thus not patentable), opining that these counter-rulings would be good news to software innovators who wish to protect their brainchildren.
