Pro Bono Overview
Dykema believes the practice of law, especially in a large commercial firm, is a privilege that carries with it profound societal responsibilities. Performing legal services for those who are traditionally denied access to justice - or for organizations that benefit such persons - is a central part of our effort to improve the quality of life for the underserved in our community
Dykema has had a long tradition of commitment to pro bono legal service. Our pro bono representation of Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Damon Keith in the famous Keith case involving illegal government surveillance of unpopular groups during the 1960s has been recognized as a significant legal milestone.
Our formal policy ensures that all lawyers and legal assistants will receive “credit” for pro bono work. We are using the voluntary standard for pro bono service that many states use as our mandatory requirement at Dykema. We expect each attorney to contribute a minimum of 30 hours of pro bono service each year or contribute $300 to an approved legal services organization.
Our full-time attorney pro bono coordinator, Heidi Naasko, manages our day to day pro bono activities, initiatives and programs for each of our 10 offices nationally.
