Malven to Kick Off Technology Law Seminar With Discussion of Technology Licensing

BLOOMFIELD HILLS—Dykema Gossett, PLLC announced today that Mark Malven, member and leader of the Firm’s Technology and Sourcing Transactions practice, is scheduled to speak at the 4th Annual Information Technology Law Seminar on September 21, 2011. Live presentations will be held in Plymouth, Michigan, which will be accompanied by a simultaneous webcast of the day’s presentations.

The seminar is presented by the Information Technology Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan in cooperation with the Institute of Continuing Legal Education. It will serve as a training platform for in-house and outside counsel to deepen their understanding of the key legal issues and drafting strategies in the areas of online business and technology deals. Participants will have the opportunity to learn how to:

  1. Avoid costly mistakes when you draft and negotiate technology license agreements
  2. Implement best practices in data security and privacy to help your clients guard customer information
  3. Effectively advise your clients on the key issues relating to operating a web-based business
  4. Safeguard your clients' domain names and trademark rights on the web
  5. Take a multimedia exploration into copyright protection for web sites
  6. Understand social media in the workplace and how companies are using it themselves

Malven will kick off the day’s substantive presentations with his session addressing "The Keys to Technology Licensing" at 9:15 a.m. on September 21, 2011. The session will cover:

  1. The basics of technology licensing
  2. Critical mistakes to avoid in technology licensing
  3. Handling licensing negotiations

Malven focuses his practice in the negotiation of technology transactions and the representation of technology-based businesses. He has handled hundreds of strategic technology transactions involving development, consulting, sponsored university research, manufacturing, licensing, distribution, value-added reseller, private-label, content licensing, e-commerce, acquisition, and joint venture relationships. Malven currently serves as Chair of the Information Technology Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan and is recognized as a Michigan Super Lawyer in the areas of Information Technology and Outsourcing (2009-2011) by the publishers of Law & Politics.
