Awards & Recognitions

We welcome the recognition and acknowledgements that we have earned for our pro bono services:

  • Dykema attorneys Heather Kramer and Melanie Chico were presented with an Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service by The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.The award was presented at the Eighteenth Annual Excellence in Pro Bono and Public Interest Service Award Ceremony in May 2017.
  • Dykema was named 2016 "Pro Bono Law Firm of the Year" by the Legal Aid and Defender Association.
  • Dykema was listed in the State Bar of Michigan’s Pro Bono Circle of Excellence for 2016.
  • James S. Cameron, Jr., Ann Arbor Office Managing Member, and Heidi Naasko, Ann Arbor-based National Pro Bono and Diversity Counsel, were recipients of the Washtenaw County Bar Association’s 3rd Annual Pro Bono/Public Service Award. This award, conferred in February 2014, is bestowed annually to a lawyer or organization that has made significant contributions to pro bono and/or public service work.
  • Dykema was named 2014 Outstanding Firm of the Year from San Antonio Bar Association (SABA) based on the commitment from the Firm's attorneys to volunteering their time at SABA's Community Justice Program pro bono legal clinics, which help low-income residents in the community access pro bono legal services. According to SABA, Dykema took more cases than any other firm or organization during the year.
  • A Dykema attorney received Excellence in Pro Bono Services and Public Interest Award from The United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois and the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association based on her work defending a pro bono client in a race discrimination case.
  • Six Chicago-based Dykema attorneys earned thanks from National Immigrant Justice Center for providing legal counsel to a number of their immigrant clients in 2013.
  • Dykema was named 2012, 2009 and 2004 Law Firm of the Year by Michigan Community Resources, an organization that provides pro bono legal services and technical assistance to nonprofits who serve low income individuals and communities statewide. The award is conferred upon a law firm that exemplifies the highest standards and pro bono ethics of the profession, which Dykema is described as having delivered “consistently and with integrity.”
  • In November 2012, at the Pro Bono Institute Annual Dinner, Dykema was named a co-recipient of the 2012 CPBO Pro Bono Partner Award with its client, Ford Motor Company, and Michigan Community Resources (MCR). This award recognized Ford/Dykema/MCR for having developed and implemented the Nonprofit Survival Series Clinics, an innovative program that freely provides nonprofits—many of which face intense financial pressures as unemployment and poverty have increased even as government funding has declined—legal insights and strategic business counsel.
  • Dykema attorneys selected by the U.S. District Court and the Chicago Chapter of the Federal Bar Association in May 2012 to receive an Award for Excellence in Pro Bono Service, which recognizes their outstanding work in an international kidnapping case.
  • The Firm enjoys national and local accolades for its pro bono practice and continues to be a leader in many regards.
    • In April 2011, the Chairman accepted on behalf of the Firm the ABA Business Law Section National Pro Bono Service Award, presented in Boston. 
    • In October 2010, the Firm received a Beacon of Justice Award from the National Public Defender Association. The award was presented in Washington, D.C.
    • In 2009, the Firm received the ABA Death Penalty Representation Exceptional Service Award. The award was bestowed in Atlanta, Georgia.

In addition, our attorneys have received individual recognition for their pro bono contributions, including three members of the Firm who have received the Cummiskey Award, the Michigan State Bar’s highest award for pro bono service. Within the Firm, we biannually honor attorneys and legal assistants for their pro bono contributions with the Firm’s pro bono award.
