Janis Hui Ozaki is an attorney in the Real Estate and Business Litigation Departments of Dykema's Los Angeles office. She focuses on real estate, business, and employment disputes.   

Ms. Ozaki provides intelligent, strategic, and aggressive advocacy.  She successfully prosecutes and defends cases in state and federal courts, complex courts, arbitrations, other alternative dispute resolution forums, and administrative proceedings. Her strengths include understanding her clients’ goals, developing custom-tailored solutions to their complex legal and business problems, and effectively communicating client narratives and legal arguments in the courtroom. 

Ms. Ozaki works with domestic and international clients from a broad array of industries, including real estate, construction, finance, insurance, banking, mortgage, restaurant, hospitality, tourism, travel, entertainment, import/export, transportation, and apparel. 

Her past clients include landlords, tenants, real estate brokers, receivers, developers, contractors, financial institutions, investors, entrepreneurs, restaurateurs, private investors, employees, doctors, dentists, lawyers, accountants, investment professionals, entertainment industry professionals, music managers, authors, and television producers. 

At UCLA School of Law, Ms. Ozaki was a member of the Moot Court Honors Team, a Writing Advisor for the First-Year Lawyering Skills Program, and a judicial extern for the Honorable S. James Otero of the United States District Court, Central District of California. Ms. Ozaki’s hobbies include running road races, poker tournaments, and tennis.

Ms. Ozaki speaks fluent Cantonese and conversational French.


Commercial Real Estate

Ms. Ozaki has substantial experience litigating and advising commercial real estate matters, including landlord-tenant disputes, leasing, purchase and sale agreements, broker commissions, broker misrepresentations, broker-client relations, foreclosures, evictions, escrow disputes, construction, receiverships, and general contractor and subcontractor disputes.


Ms. Ozaki has extensive experience litigating business matters, including contract breaches, partnership and joint venture disputes, business torts, fraud, embezzlement, constructive fraud, fiduciary duties, legal malpractice, bankruptcy adversary proceedings, corporate dissolutions, receiverships, intellectual property, debt collection, and enforcement of judgments.


Ms. Ozaki has successfully handled a variety of employment cases, which include claims for discrimination, harassment, retaliation, unlawful termination, violations of the California Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA), misappropriation of trade secrets, wage and hour violations, and commission disputes. She has also advised clients on issues relating to confidentiality agreements, non-compete agreements, lay-offs, terminations, employee handbook and employment contracts.


Ms. Ozaki represents and counsels international clients from Hong Kong, China, Mexico, and Canada on topics including prosecuting U.S. and foreign companies, defending against U.S.-based lawsuits, import/export issues, custom broker issues, forming U.S. companies, corporate registrations, and business licensing issues.

Obtained dismissal with prejudice of federal lawsuit against American General Mortgage Company for violation of Real Estate Settlement Procedures Act Truth In Lending Act, Unfair Competition Law, and fraud

Obtained order deeming plaintiff a vexatious litigant and case dismissal

Represented music manager in administrative hearing before the California Labor Commissioner on novel issue of whether management contracts with mixers are recording contracts exempt from the Talent Agency Act

Obtained full recovery of damages for importing apparel company in negligence action against customs broker

Obtained favorable settlement of employee discrimination and harassment claims on behalf of employer amounting to less than 2% of plaintiff’s demand

Obtained $130,000 pre-judgment writ of attachment against individual and business in breach of contract action

Obtained favorable cash-for-keys settlement of foreclosure and unlawful detainer action on behalf of Universal Bank

Successfully litigated and negotiated dozens of repayment workouts between attorneys and litigation support providers
