Butch Hulse is a member of Dykema’s Litigation Department and Government Investigations and Corporate Compliance team. Mr. Hulse is a resident of the San Antonio office but maintains an office in Washington D.C. as well.

Mr. Hulse is a highly accomplished attorney and compliance professional with two decades of large law firm and in-house legal, compliance and risk management experience. Mr. Hulse is known for being a creative problem solver and trusted advisor. Prior to rejoining Dykema, he served as head of litigation for a publicly traded medical device company with ~$2B in revenue, divisional general counsel of a ~$1.5B business and later as Chief Compliance Officer and Senior Vice President, Enterprise Risk Management, Quality and Regulatory of a $2B company. This unique combination of cross-industry in-house and large law firm experience provides him with a perspective few can offer.  

Mr. Hulse has extensive experience representing and advising clients, including Fortune 100 companies, officers, boards and board committees on complex litigation, health care compliance, anticorruption compliance and other risk matters. Mr. Hulse has experience interacting with federal, state and foreign regulatory and enforcement agencies on a wide array of matters. He has led numerous internal investigations, managed third party inquiries and investigations and litigated or managed litigation in a variety of complex and high stakes matters, including many “bet the company” disputes. Mr. Hulse has experience litigating contract and business tort disputes, patent infringement lawsuits, shareholder derivative lawsuits, insurance coverage disputes, professional/fiduciary liability lawsuits and products liability litigation, including class actions, multi-district litigation and mass tort cases. Given his unique background, Mr. Hulse is frequently called upon to serve as outside general counsel for organizations without large legal departments, particularly in the areas of governance, risk and compliance.

Experience

Complex Litigation

Mr. Hulse is frequently retained to litigate complex disputes in state and federal courts as well as in front of arbitrations tribunals in a wide variety of high stakes areas. He has represented and continues to represent Fortune 100 companies, privately held companies, high net worth individuals and private universities.

Internal and Government Investigations

Mr. Hulse is highly experienced in leading internal investigations as well as representing organizations which are the subject of an inquiry or investigation by federal, state, local or foreign authorities in a variety of contexts. Mr. Hulse has extensive experience handling False Claims Act and Foreign Corrupt Practices Act investigations.

Compliance Program Development and Assessment

Mr. Hulse assists clients with the design, development, implementation and assessment of corporate compliance programs. He has assisted public and private, large and small clients in several industries with an emphasis in health care, medical technology and energy. Given his expertise in the field, he is frequently called upon to write or speak on the topic.

Outside General Counsel

Given his unique background and experience, Mr. Hulse is often retained to act as “outside general counsel” for companies lacking large in-house legal, compliance or risk teams. In this capacity, Mr. Hulse counsels clients in a variety of legal, governance, compliance and risk matters.

M&A Diligence and Integration

Mr. Hulse assists clients in the evaluation of legal and compliance risks in due diligence exercises in the merger and acquisition context. He is often retained to assist with post-closing efforts to resolve or mitigate risks as well as with integration efforts.
