Dykema, a leading national law firm, is proud to announce that Tom Schehr was selected by Michigan Lawyers Weekly as a “Leader in the Law.” Schehr will be recognized at an awards luncheon on December 5, 2023. Michigan Lawyers Weekly also will publish a special feature featuring the nominees.

According to the publication, the "Leaders in the Law" are those attorneys who are setting the standard for other lawyers. They offer a wealth of expertise in diverse areas of the law and their outstanding contributions have changed the practice of law and the justice system. They have demonstrated tremendous leadership and mentorship, and displayed a dedication not just to the legal community, but to their communities at large.

At Dykema, Schehr serves as Director of the firm's Financial Industry Group, a team of more than 100 lawyers covering various practices and specialties. As Director, a position he has held for more than four years, Tom leads one of Dykema’s largest and most successful groups. He was also recently elected to serve as a member of Dykema’s Executive Board for a three-year term that commences on January 1, 2024, and he is the past Leader of the firm’s Financial Services Litigation Practice Group.

In his practice, Schehr is an experienced litigator who is highly regarded for his vigorous advocacy and keen judgment in handling business, financial services, and healthcare disputes. He litigates in federal and state courts. He also has extensive experience handling arbitrations and is frequently appointed as a special master and retained as an arbitrator and mediator—demonstrating the respect he has earned from judges and opposing counsel. He is a Certified Commercial Arbitrator (American Arbitration Association) and an Approved AHLA Neutral/Arbitrator (American Health Law Association).

Schehr has had million-dollar victories following jury trials and arbitration in business disputes, successful defense judgments following trails in trade secret, real estate, and breach of contract actions, and favorable results in health care disputes involving administrative agency proceedings and medical staff matters. He has won appeals for financial services industry clients in important cases before the Michigan Supreme Court and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 6th Circuit.

Outside of his practice, Schehr also plays an important role in Michigan’s legal industry through leadership and involvement in professional organizations. He serves as Co-Chair of the Financial Institutions Committee of the State Bar of Michigan Business Law Section and is a Life Fellow and Michigan Fellows Co-Chair of the American Bar Foundation. He is also a former President of the Federal Bar Association’s Eastern District of Michigan Chapter and served on the Local Rules Advisory Committee of the United States District Court for the Eastern District of Michigan.
