R. Lance Boldrey, Lansing-based member whose practice focuses on tribal and commercial gaming and on Indian law (with an emphasis on economic development and state-tribal relations), participated in a panel discussion in a one-hour webinar presented by the Native American Financial Officers Association (NAFOA) on Thursday, May 29, 2014 at 12 noon (ET).

In this webinar, Boldrey and his fellow panelists discussed this week's U.S. Supreme Court decision in Michigan v. Bay Mills Indian Community, which—although it upheld tribal sovereign immunity—is judged not to be "an unequivocal win" for Indian Country.

Boldrey and his fellow panelists shared an overview of the case and delivered a PowerPoint presentation that addressed:

  • The decision's impact on tribal sovereignty and tribal economies
  • Other pending state actions that could affect tribal sovereignty, potentially disturbing the status quo set forth by this Supreme Court ruling
