Richard E. F. Holdrup, Chief Operating Officer at Dykema, was quoted in an article—“Non-lawyers now a fixture in firm management”—published in Detroit Legal News on October 28, 2013. The article addresses the growing trend of law firms putting non-lawyers in senior leadership positions, running administrative and operational functions.

Holdrup, who joined Dykema in August 2013, has three decades of business experience, the last 11 of which have been in the service of law firms. In the article, Holdrup observes, “Firms realize they have become large, complex businesses—and you need that [business] expertise.” He adds that since lawyers aren’t generally trained as business managers, “their higher use to the legal firm is to practice law.”

The article notes that the role of the chief operating officer in law firms has evolved in the past decade, overseeing the business and financial operations, supervising day-to-day operations and guiding development and implementation of strategic decisions by the firms’ chief executive and executive boards.
