Richard G. Goetz, senior counsel and leader of Dykema’s International practice, and Julia Zhu, senior counsel and participant in the Firm’s China Team, are quoted extensively in “The China Report: A New Look at China’s Changing Business and Legal Landscape.” This special report is the featured cover story in the November 2012 issue of Inside Counsel.

This special report provides an inside look at the business climate and regulatory environment of the world’s second-largest economy, and points out that, for the many opportunities that exist in China, there are countless challenges that need to be overcome.

In the article, Zhu, who began her legal career in Nanjing Gulou District Court, reinforces the importance of forging strong relationships with local experts. She observes that “rules and regulations are coming from different authorities in China. Some of them are consistent, some of them are inconsistent.” Zhu notes that local, experienced lawyers can be a “great source to keep companies abreast of what’s going on in China”.

Goetz, who has practiced international law for more than 35 years, says that while China’s central government has, over the last decade, ”delegated more business-regulating authority to the local level,” there remains “some degree of protectionism, especially in local industries.”

This Inside Counsel special report is a must-read for any or all who currently do business with China, or look to investigate more fully the opportunities within what is currently the fastest-growing market in the world. To read this article in its entirety, click here
