Dante Stella, member and leader of Dykema’s e-discovery practice, is quoted in an article, “The benefits of an in-house discovery team,” that appears in the August, 2012 issue of Inside Counsel. In the article, Stella stresses the importance of outside counsel, even when relying upon an in-house team, noting that outside counsel often negotiates the parameters of discovery in cases and frequently serves as “an added line of defense” against opponents’ demands. Stella also observes that an outside firm can customize its offerings to do as much, or as little, as in-house systems and structures require.

In a companion piece, available exclusively on InsideCounsel.com, Stella provides five keys to constructing a successful in-house e-discovery team. Chief among these are: establishing realistic expectations, incorporating technology incrementally (that is, step-by-step) based on cost effectiveness and results, and developing a strategic business rationale—rather than relying expressly upon legal reasons—to put together a budget request.
