DALLAS— Dykema today announced the addition of David J. Schenck, former Deputy Attorney General for Legal Counsel to the Texas Attorney General, as a member of the firm’s Litigation Department in its Dallas office.

As Deputy Attorney General for Legal Counsel, Schenck supervised more than 100 lawyers and other professionals and was responsible for the operations of the Opinions Committee, the General Counsel's office and the Public Finance, Open Records, and Legal Technical Support Divisions. In addition, Schenck served as the state’s lead counsel and led a team dedicated to the defense of the state’s newly drawn Senate, House and Congressional redistricting plans before three-judge panels in Washington, D.C. and Texas.

“We are pleased to add an attorney of David’s caliber to Dykema’s Dallas office as we continue to grow our presence there across a number of strategic practice groups,” said  Peter M. Kellett, Dykema’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer. “David brings to the firm extraordinary experience as a trial, appellate, and government lawyer that will advance our strong litigation reputation and capabilities in Dallas, and nationally.”

Previously, Schenck was a partner in Jones Day’s Texas Issues and Appeals Practice Group. Earlier in his career, he was a partner with Dallas-based law firm Hughes & Luce LLP (now K&L Gates LLP) and served as that firm’s Appellate Section Head. He also served as a law clerk for the late Honorable Henry A. Politz, Chief Judge of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit.

“David is a highly respected appellate lawyer and is widely regarded as one of the top Fifth Circuit appellate lawyers in the state of Texas,” said Daniel J. Stephenson, chair of Dykema’s Litigation Department. “His stellar reputation and deep pool of contacts, combined with the practice of Chris Kratovil, give the firm’s Dallas office one of the strongest appellate practices and, in particular, federal appellate practices, in the Southwest.”

A frequent author, Schenck is AV rated by Martindale-Hubbell and is Board Certified in Civil Appellate Law. He is also recognized by Texas Super Lawyers. He received a J.D. from Baylor University, where he was Editor-In-Chief of the Law Review and class valedictorian, and a B.A., magna cum laude, from The State University of New York.

With more than 180 attorneys actively engaged in all aspects of business, commercial and product liability litigation, Dykema has one of the most experienced, sophisticated and successful litigation and trial practices in the nation. Representing a diverse client base in nearly every substantive area of the law, through trial and appeal, highly experienced litigators practice in state and federal courts throughout the country.
