Grant P. Gilezan serves as Leader of Dykema's Environmental Law Practice Group. His environmental practice focuses on regulatory, transactional, contracting, policy and litigation matters involving private and public sector clients. He has experience in site remediation (specializing in multiparty cleanup projects involving large-scale engineering and construction efforts); facility audits; spill reporting; facility closure and redevelopment projects; air emission requirements (especially engine testing and coating); wastewater regulation; underground storage tanks; waste management; TSCA reporting; business and property sales and leases; lobbying on proposed legislation and rulemaking; contracting for environmental services, materials and equipment; and government enforcement, cost recovery and natural resource damage claims.

Experience

  • Agency Dealings
    Negotiated permits, administrative agreements and judicial consent orders with Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, U.S. EPA and OSHA on air, wastewater, solid/hazardous waste, cleanup and health/safety matters.
  • Remedial Projects
    Counseling individual and groups of industrial companies on matters involving the design and construction of multimillion dollar site cleanup projects, including principal responsibility for budget, procurement, contract personnel and disputes, daily operations and dealings with agencies.
  • Policy
    Registered lobbyist. Testified before Michigan Senate; negotiated legislation and regulation with legislative and administrative personnel; participate in industry stakeholder groups; and prepared position papers on various environmental initiatives, legislation and regulation.
  • Transactions
    Handling due diligence matters and drafting provisions to address environmental aspects of property and business sales (asset and stock), leases, divestitures and mergers throughout the United States, involving hospitals, industrial companies, commercial structures, municipal properties, small businesses and brownfields.
  • Contracting
    Procuring, drafting contracts and negotiating disputes, change orders and claims for environmental consulting services; regulated materials; pollution control equipment; supply chain certification, warranties and indemnifications; and remedial construction, operation and maintenance work.
