Lea F. Courington, Dallas-based senior counsel in Dykema’s Health Care practice group and Dental Service Organizations Industry Group, authored the DentistryIQ article, “Protect Your Dental Practice from Government Scrutiny—Watch for Medicare and Medicaid Overpayments.”

In her article, Courington cautions practitioners that delaying the reporting of dental claim overpayments by CMS (the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services, a branch of the Department of Health and Human Services) places providers at risk of False Claims Act charges, possibly resulting in high monetary penalties and exclusion from health care programs. Courington also recommends closely monitoring accounting entries so as to catch and report any irregularities before the government becomes aware of them.
