Alex W. Craigie, a Los Angeles-based member in Dykema’s Labor & Employment group whose practice focuses on helping employers prevent, manage and resolve employment-related disputes, co-authored an article—“Don’t Skip the Boring Part: Nonprofits Can’t Afford to Ignore HR Issues”—that appears in the September/October 2013 issue of Nonprofit World. Nonprofit World, now in its 31st year, is published bi-monthly by the Society for Nonprofit Organizations.

In the article, co-authored by Ranlyn Tilley Hill (founder and managing partner of Benevolent Vision, a consultancy that provides fundraising and management services to philanthropic organizations), Craigie outlines three human-resource areas that nonprofit organizations often fail to prepare for adequately: wage and hour issues; discrimination, accommodation and retaliation claims; and, termination issues.

Craigie and Hill not only identify the HR-related realms that can cause most distress, but provide helpful tips, practical advice and suggested best practices that employers should use to minimize liability.
