Press Releases

Dykema, a leading national law firm, is proud to announce that at the recent American Bar Association’s Appellate Judges Education Institute, Jill Wheaton and Mark Magyar were each elected to serve in leadership positions for the American Bar Association's (ABA) Council of Appellate Lawyers (CAL). Wheaton was elected as Chair of the Council’s Executive Board, while Magyar was elected as a member of the Executive Board.

The ABA CAL is the first and only national appellate bench-bar organization. Its mission is to foster a dialogue among federal and state appellate lawyers and judges that will improve appellate advocacy and strengthen ties among the numerous appellate bar associations. Its members come from across the country and include attorneys in private practice, governmental attorneys, military attorneys, and in-house counsel.

Wheaton serves as the co-leader of Dykema’s Appellate and Critical Motions team and is known nationally for her work in the field of appellate law. She is a frequent writer and speaker on appellate issues. Wheaton has also served on appellate sections and committees for several professional legal industry organizations, including the Defense Research Institute, Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society, Michigan Appellate Bench-Bar, and State Bar of Michigan.

Wheaton earned a J.D., cum laude, from the University of Michigan.

Magyar is a member of Dykema’s Business Litigation practice group and its Appellate and Critical Motions team. In 2023, Magyar was reelected to the Council of the Michigan State Bar Association’s Appellate Practice Section, on which Magyar has served since 2016. Magyar is a member of the Michigan Supreme Court Historical Society and he was recognized by Best Lawyers for 2024 in the field of Appellate Practice.

Magyar earned a J.D. from the University of Michigan and a B.A., magna cum laude, from Western Michigan University.
