Diego F. Freire

Senior Attorney

Diego F. Freire is an intellectual property (IP) attorney with nearly a decade of experience protecting, enforcing, and commercializing his clients' most valuable technological assets. His practice spans the full lifecycle of IP management, encompassing domestic and international patent and trademark prosecution, high-value IP licensing and transactional drafting, strategic corporate counseling, and high-stakes litigation.

As a thought leader on the intersection of AI and IP law, Diego has secured multiple patents in the field of AI from the start of his career. He regularly counsels clients on the rapidly evolving legal landscape of generative AI—including complex inventorship questions, copyright strategies for AI-generated content, and the negotiation of data licensing agreements for model training. He has extensive experience structuring and negotiating complex IP licensing transactions, particularly those involving the transfer of media, software, and content assets to technology and AI companies. Diego also maintains a robust design patent practice, helping spirits, medical device, and automotive companies protect their distinct product aesthetics, packaging, and industrial designs. Furthermore, Diego is highly sought after for navigating complex patent eligibility challenges under 35 U.S.C. § 101, consistently securing protection in areas where eligibility rejections are more difficult.

Diego’s legal practice is anchored by a sophisticated real world technical background. Prior to entering the legal profession, he worked as an Edison Engineer at GE Healthcare, designing Computed Tomography (CT) systems and life sciences instrumentation. He also holds a Master’s degree in Computer Engineering, where his thesis focused on designing neural networks for data classification. As both an engineer and an inventor, Diego has a unique ability to bridge the gap between technical and legal teams—working directly with R&D departments to identify patentable innovation while partnering with general counsel and executive leadership to align IP assets with overarching business objectives.

Beyond prosecution, transactional strategy, and advisory work, Diego is an experienced litigator who represents clients on both sides of high-stakes IP disputes involving patents, copyrights, trade secrets, and trademarks. His litigation experience includes defending and enforcing AI-related patents, handling automotive patent disputes, and resolving EULA enforcement matters. To protect his clients’ market share and brand equity, he has experience against fraudulent and infringing sellers on global online platforms as well as cancelling fraudulent trademarks.
