Bonnie Mayfield, a Bloomfield Hills-based member of Dykema’s Litigation and Labor & Employment practices, and Dan Stephenson, who directs Dykema’s 180-member Litigation Department and is resident in Los Angeles, participated in a panel discussion at this year’s Annual CLE Conference of the American Bar Association Section of Litigation, held recently in Chicago.

Mayfield moderated—and Stephenson served as one of four presenters in—a panel discussion, “Disaster Averted, Mass Tort Resolved: Settling Mass Tort Disaster Cases.” The blue-ribbon panel, which also included a professor from Duke University School of Law and a judge from the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, addressed the complexities and ethical implications of settling hundreds of cases that involve different types of injuries with vastly different levels of severity and financial exposure.

Panel members drew upon their professional experiences to provide practical insight into the mechanics involved in negotiating and settling such cases. The panel also discussed the ethical limitations, hurdles and pitfalls that confront even the most seasoned litigator.

This panel discussion was one of more than 70 CLE programs offered during this year’s two-and-a-half-day ABA Section of Litigation Annual Conference.
