Leonard C. Wolfe, Lansing-based member, Director of the Firm’s Regulated Industries Department and Practice Group Leader of Dykema’s Government Policy Group, is quoted in an article—“Government Shutdown: Is It Making Red and Blue States More Purple?”—that appears in the October 11 edition of the Christian Science Monitor.

Wolfe, when asked how state leaders of both parties are helping their constituents wrestle with the consequences of the federal government shutdown—now in place since October 1—notes that, “Politicians who are up for reelection want to show that they are in control of their state.”

He observes that citizens are less interested in partisanship than they are in having the services and features that government traditionally provides restored to normalcy. “They expect their local politicians to be able to help,” Wolfe says. He adds that a number of state politicians are actively working to align themselves more strongly with their constituents and to distance themselves “from what is going on in Washington.”
