Gavin Hill is the lawyer companies call when complex systems failures escalate into high‑value, high‑visibility investigations, litigation, or regulatory scrutiny. A seasoned litigator with deep technical fluency, Gavin is known for translating engineering‑level detail into clear, persuasive narratives that resonate with judges, juries, and agency investigators alike. His practice spans catastrophic injury and death claims, commercial disputes, and high‑stakes investigations involving contractual obligations, business torts, trade secrets, and multidistrict litigation.

A significant part of Gavin’s work centers on defending oil and gas companies in matters arising from wellsite explosions, equipment failures, and other catastrophic incidents. He collaborates closely with leading experts in offshore drilling, casing, cementing, well integrity, pressure testing, wireline operations, and mudlogging—speaking their language to uncover root causes and build compelling defenses.

Gavin also founded Dykema’s Emergency Incident Response (EIR) and OSHA Defense Team, a field‑tested, litigation‑ready practice built to quarterback clients through the most disruptive moments an organization can face. When an incident occurs, whether involving injury, property damage, or fatalities, the EIR Team steps in immediately to stabilize the situation, protect the evidentiary record, and serve as the single point of contact and for resolution with OSHA and other state and federal agencies. EIR directly engages with compliance officers and Area Offices, guides internal reviews and root‑cause analyses, coordinates trusted experts, manages extensive document and information requests, and develops tailored strategies for settlement or litigation.

EIR works hands‑on, in real-time and in the real‑world. Team members deploys nationwide to job sites across industries, including oilfields, refineries, heavy manufacturing, construction, industrial gas facilities, and municipal infrastructure, to marshal or participate in site investigations, evidence preservation, and early‑stage regulatory engagement. EIR leverages its deep understanding of OSHA’s playbook to craft meaningful enhanced abatements aligned with each client’s operational priorities. When settlement is not achievable, Dykema’s EIR Team vigorously contests citations before the U.S. Department of Labor’s Review Commission, and defends the client with seasoned litigation and trial counsel in follow-on litigation—usually third party or indemnity claims—in state and federal courts.

Beyond incident response, Gavin has guided clients through congressional inquiries and investigations by state and federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration area offices (OSHA), the U.S. Chemical Safety Board (CSB), the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT-PMHSA), the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and other agencies. His holistic, common‑sense approach often shortens or avoids litigation altogether, or positions clients for a strong defense when litigation is unavoidable. Trained in media relations, he also works closely with internal and external communications teams to craft messaging that protects corporate brands and reputations during high‑pressure events.

Whether the challenge is a catastrophic event, a whistleblower complaint, or a complex commercial dispute, Gavin brings a steady, strategic, and technically sophisticated presence. He helps clients navigate their most difficult moments while keeping operations, people, and long‑term business interests front and center.

I help clients overcome seemingly intractable problems, working at the knowledge level of clients’ subject matter experts to find solutions. My primary responsibility is to serve the client’s interests, but what I do often serves a public purpose, too.
