Jim Hermon provides full-circle employment counsel, helping clients manage employer-employee relationships at all levels and meet their state and federal regulatory and statutory obligations. He advises on all aspects of the workplace, from onboarding and handbooks to internal investigations and litigation, to exits and severance agreements, always with an eye on the client’s business objectives.

Talent and human capital drive revenue and growth, making morale, retention, and productivity critical for any company. Employers must strike a balance between providing a safe and supportive place to work, operating a competitive business, and complying with ever-changing employment laws and regulations including the emergence of workplace use of artificial intelligence. Jim anticipates and addresses a wide range of issues within the employer-employee relationship, freeing owners, executives, and managers from distractions so they can focus on managing the company.

Jim guides clients through the business lifecycle, but much of his practice involves representing employers in workplace disputes. He appears in court, before administrative agencies, and at arbitration and mediation proceedings to defend clients against claims of unlawful discrimination, sexual harassment, retaliation, breach of employment contracts, and wage and hour and overtime violations, both in individual and collective actions. He also advocates for employers in trade secret misappropriation and non-compete disputes.

Besides litigation, Jim negotiates employment contracts and severance agreements involving highly-placed executives and offers guidance on executive compensation, incentives, and bonus structures. He maintains employee handbooks and workplace policies and provides compliance-based training to managers to avoid future risks.

As Jim tells his clients, employees are human, and they make mistakes—how you deal with those mistakes can be a make-or-break proposition. Clients value his perspective, capacity to see the bigger picture, and commitment to finding solutions that work. Recognized as one of the top employment lawyers in Michigan in Chambers USA 2023, clients note Jim is “always well informed, defends cases strategically and responds promptly to communications. He always provides practical advice to go with his legal opinions.”

When a client asks me about a particular situation or response, no is not an answer. Employers don’t pay me to be a roadblock, nor can the advice I give be arcane. I provide real-world, actionable counsel.
