With House and Senate lawmakers unable to reach agreement on a spending bill early this week, the U.S. government was forced to shut down at 12:01 am (ET) on Tuesday, October 1. At present, it’s unclear how long this shutdown will last. What is certain is that many federal services have been dramatically reduced and a number of federal agencies closed until Congress fashions a budget agreement.

Andrew Buczek, Washington, D.C.-based government policy advisor in Dykema’s Government Policy & Practice, shared his perspectives on  what this shutdown means in a client alert—“U.S. Government Shuts Down; What Federal Agencies and Programs Are Most Affected?”—issued  October 1.  To read this brief but comprehensive review, click here.

Bonnie Mayfield, a Bloomfield Hills-based member of the Firm’s Litigation and Labor & Employment practices, authored an equally compelling take on the federal government shutdown, from the perspective of those agencies and services that most directly impact labor and employment matters. Mayfield’s article—“Braced for Federal Government Shutdown: Agency Contingency Plans”—was posted October 2 on Dykema’s Labor & Employment Law Blog (click here to read).
